Race the Train is a unique event and a must for all multi-terrain runners. Race the Train takes place alongside, as far as practicable, the route taken by the Talyllyn Railway on its journey to Abergynolwyn and back.
This unique event has many competitors returning regularly to try and better their performance or just beat that train – while others have run nearly every year since the races started in 1984!
Most serious runners have heard about it either from their friends, TV, or the press so if you haven’t already “Raced the train” perhaps 2025 is the year to attempt it.

The Courses: A Challenge for Every Runner
Race the Train offers multiple race options, catering to a wide range of abilities and experience levels:
- The Rotary Challenge (14 miles): The flagship race that covers the full distance alongside the train. This race is the ultimate test for those looking to push their limits and see if they can outpace the steam engine.
- The Quarry Challenge (10k): A shorter but equally demanding race that offers a taste of the full experience. This course is ideal for those who may not be ready for the full 14 miles but still want to experience the thrill of racing the train.
- The Dolgoch Challenge (5.5 miles): Perfect for beginners or those who prefer a less intense race. This course is still challenging but offers a more manageable distance.
- The Tynllwynhen Challenge (3.5 miles): The shortest race, suitable for younger runners or those looking for a fun, less competitive experience.
